I never pictured you as one who worked hard :-):-) but 5 months of vacation sounds nice.
Report · 2:11pm
I got this way after being in JPN
and realizing I'm so old
with no material anythings and no way to retire
after so many years of travelling and all
so tell me about your plans
so I can help you out as much as I can
I mean like how many days total in Japan, how many ppl are coming, what are important things you'd like to see/do etc
Report · 2:16pm
Takayama and the Alps, Kyoto and then Hiroshima (as an old peace activist cannot miss the bomb site with my son)
Report · 2:17pm
2 ppl? you and son?
how old is he?
Report · 2:19pm
oh, saw the rest of the message. I have not figured out days yet except the time in Nagoya. June 9 - 12. Just me and my son, my partner's sister is dying of cancer so she has to stay back. Robin is 15. I guess that I would like a mix of cultural/ nature. I really do not have a travel philosophy as I have never been away for N. America
Report · 2:19pm
Ok, now hold on
For the Kyoto part your in the best hands possible
Report · 2:20pm
I have had brief periods in my life where I worked hard and got paid alot. The last one was in 1994. I was thinking Nagoya (where the tournament occurs),
Report · 2:20pm
tournament?
Report · 2:22pm
yep, I figured the hands would be good. Robin plays a card game called Magic the Gathering, seriously. He won a tournament that qualifies him (and gets a round trip plane ticket) for the Pro Tour event in Nagoya (the winner of this get $30K US)
Report · 2:22pm
so thats why Nagoya comes into this
I live in the very last traditional Kyoto-style house on the only road that used to connect Kyoto to Tonyo. There is a stone slab in front of my house that marks where samurais used to put heads on stakes to warn visitors.
Report · 2:24pm
yep. I had never heard of it before; it does not look like a top notch destination. We are homeschooling him so want the trip to be "broadening" I realize I need to do more thinking about my goals for the trip.
Report · 2:24pm
5 minutes walk from my house is the second Zen temple and first ZXen monastary in Japan
Zen
Report · 2:24pm
Holy shit!That is cool.
Report · 2:25pm
about 15 minutes away is one of Japan's most important Shinto shrines
a quick subway ride takes you to the old Emperor's palace
Report · 2:25pm
I started a blog (mostly for language learning): http://jimgoestojapan.blogspot.com/
Report · 2:25pm
and the samurai castle
My house is rented
mY landlord is an ancient relic
he was born in this house
Report · 2:26pm
Robin did a research project on ninja for a homeschool program. Building on that would be cool too.
Report · 2:26pm
but one time a family memmber came to visit me
and my landlord allowed him to stay in a wing of the house that was nuilt for pppl to witness the coronation of hirohito
i only rent a portion of this big old place
if i could convince hm to let you two stay there a couple of days it would be really great for ouy
if not, i can try to help you find a hotel near all the good stuff
Kyoto has over 2200 temples and shrines
but my spot is next to some of the most important
Report · 2:29pm
fascinating. I don't think that I am ready to have the what do I want to do conversation yet. Did I ask you about where to look for cheap plane flights?
This is really exciting. Are you fluent in Japanese?
Report · 2:29pm
"cheap" is a word you'll need to forget in discussions involvong japan

My Japanese sucks
I was in China and Taiwan for 15 yrs b4 here
and wife is Chinese
we only use Chinese in my home
nut since I cam ehere I've been working in English

you won't be expected to speak much Japanese at all
just some politeness
Report · 2:32pm

Besides that, there are some snacks I dearly miss...
Report · 2:38pm
Well, I have raised a son who is anti-militarist and not an asshole; that is the best that i have figured out so far. The snacks on the other hand are doable. I want to bring gifts for hosts anyway.
Report · 2:39pm
